When "enforcers" boast about their ability to frighten their victims, and come across as enjoying their "work" (all of which apply in these cases) -- then I believe the term "thug" fits. Of course, companies hired their own bands of thugs to add "muscle" to the conventional, legitimate guard force ... so there's plenty to deplore about the situation. I invite your attention to my blog for April 29, which highlights another episode of conflict in the Coeur d'Alene mines. There, I note that there were "few 'good guys'" in what was going on.Revue Guruhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10925903211294652386noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8144412872099377367.post-85915621560508984472017-12-23T15:05:13.240-07:002017-12-23T15:05:13.240-07:00(Forwarded from John Wood) - ..."I think this...(Forwarded from John Wood) - ..."I think this story as written generally took a neutral tone between the two sides (which is good), but one word used "thugs" clearly was not neutral. Given the excesses on both sides one should be careful in not using "loaded" words. It's easy to offend readers, especially as there is a strong support for the miners in north Idaho. This is not in any way meant to be a negative about the main wording of the story as a whole, however. I enjoyed reading it. Thanks. Oh, by the way, the mill in the photo here was the Standard Mammoth mill just above the town of Black Bear on Canyon Creek. The locomotive at the lower left is an OR&N engine."<br /><br />(Reply from Marcus Rogers) - I will forward your remarks to the author of this article, Evan Filby. Indeed one should be cautious in using a loaded word like 'thugs' to describe people. That being said, it is hard to come up with another word that would not also be offensive to some. For example, 'enforcers' or other similar words would likely rile people. To be fair, there was probably a certain amount of 'thuggery' being done by people on both sides. Times were wild back then.Marcus9957https://www.blogger.com/profile/08447435153694718855noreply@blogger.com
